Reports To: Assistant Superintendent of Operations and Information Systems

Terms of Employment: Part-time (approximately 20 hours per week; schedule may vary based on student and program needs).

Salary: $15.00 - 17.00 per hour

FLSA Exempt/Non-Exempt: Non-exempt

 

General Job Description:

To provide targeted mentoring, advocacy, and academic support services for American Indian students, with a focus on improving attendance, academic performance, and successful transitions to post-secondary education or careers. Solicit and collect 506 forms to identify eligible students and expand participation in the Indian Education program and its cultural experiences.

Qualifications

• Associate degree required; Bachelor’s degree preferred in Education, Social Work, Human Services, or a related field.
• Experience working with students in educational, mentoring, or community-based settings.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and build relationships with students, families, and staff.
• Knowledge of or experience working with American Indian communities preferred.
• Ability to organize, monitor, and support student data related to attendance and academic progress.

• None

 

Essential Job Functions:

• Collaborate with the IEA Parent Liaison to identify students who may benefit from the services and support provided through this position.
• Maintain regular communication with parents regarding student progress, academic needs, and available support services.
• Maintain accurate, confidential, and up-to-date records of student and parent interactions, communications, and services provided.

 

• Student Advocacy & Support

 

• Serve as a positive role model and advocate for American Indian students.
• Build strong, supportive relationships that promote student engagement, confidence, and success.

 

• Attendance Monitoring

 

• Monitor daily attendance and tardiness for assigned students.
• Communicate with families as needed to address attendance concerns and promote consistent school participation.

 

• Academic Support & Guidance

 

• Serve as a liaison between American Indian students and school staff to ensure access to tutoring, academic interventions, and credit recovery opportunities.
• Provide supplemental tutoring and enrichment in reading, math, and science, as appropriate.

 

• Transition Support

 

• Assist students with key academic transitions, including middle school to high school and high school to college or career pathways.
• Support SAT/ACT preparation, scholarship applications, and post-secondary planning.

 

• Family & Community Engagement

 

• Attend and support monthly parent committee meetings.
• Collaborate with families, school staff, and local tribal leadership to support student success.

 

• Other Duties

 

• Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.

 

Physical and Cognitive Requirements:

 

The major physical and cognitive requirements listed below are applicable to the IEA Mentor (Indian Education Act Mentor) classification within Hoke County Schools. Work in this classification is considered light physical work requiring the exertion of up to 20

pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move

objects.

 

Must be able to:

 

• Communicate effectively through written and verbal channels with students, families, school staff, and local tribal leadership.
• Build strong, supportive relationships and serve as a positive role model and advocate for American Indian students.
• Provide supplemental tutoring and enrichment in reading, math, and science.  
• Assist students with key academic transitions, including middle school to high school and high school to post-secondary or career pathways.  
• Organize, monitor, and support student data related to daily attendance, tardiness, and academic progress.
• Maintain confidentiality and professionalism when handling sensitive student information.
• Adapt to a part-time schedule (approximately 20 hours per week) based on student and program needs.
• Speak to individuals or groups of people with poise, voice control and confidence
• Respond adequately to inquiries or complaints
• Prepare, read and comprehend a variety of job related forms, reports, spreadsheets, records, and other documents
• Write using standard convention in all languages required by the job
• Apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions
• Be sensitive to cultural differences among individuals and groups of persons
• Operate a motor vehicle; Travel regularly between assigned schools and community meeting locations.
• Operate/use a variety of automated office machines and other office equipment
• Apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagrammatic form
